Examiner.Com - Sensitive sweets for sensitive stomachs comes to California
22-Sep-2011
Nearly two months ago a craving for a gluten free sweet came across this gluten free gal. For those of you who are familiar with gluten free baking it is not so easy to whip up your own batch of gluten free cupcakes. The other downside to gluten free baking is it takes time in the kitchen, money and ingredient after ingredient, more than regular baking.
There is always the option of using the wonderful Pamela's Products gluten free baking mixes, but sometimes this gluten free gal wants something during the week when the full time job may not permit for kitchen time.
This is when google came in extremely handy. Taking a quick break from her day, this gluten free gal googled gluten free bakeries nearby and discovered Sensitive Sweets bakery, located in Fountain Valley, California.
It just so happened Sensitive Sweets bakery only had been open for about two weeks. The google search sure felt like winning the lottery, so the next stop was Sensitive Sweets bakery.
For those who don't know it, but this gluten free gal cannot have gluten nor dairy in her diet. It can prove very difficult when eating out, let alone wanting to have a bite of chocolate, eat a cupcake or just oogle over a cookie at any bakery. This all changed when this gluten free gal discovered Sensitive Sweets bakery.
Walking in for the very first time this gluten free gal was greeted by entrepreneur and owner Melanie Hohman. With a smile on her face she welcomed this gluten free gal to her shop. She even went as far as introducing this gluten free gal to the staff who was also very helpful. Melanie took a moment out of her busy day of baking to tell her story about how she decided to open up a bakery to help those with celiac disease, gluten sensitivity as well as various other food allergies to include nut and milk allergies.
Having two son's, one with severe food allergies, Melanie is more familiar than most mom's with the idea of living life with extreme caution. She has had to pay close attention to every morsel of food that she feeds her youngest son Bradley due to his life threatening food allergies. She discovered her son had food allergies around the tender age of nine months, so you can imagine if anyone knows about food allergies, Melanie sure does. After speaking with Melanie you could see how passionate she is about her business as well as her family. She aims to please her customers with the delicious treats and sweets her dedicated gluten free bakery offers daily.
This gluten free gal was able to try a snickerdoodle cookie as well as a lemon cupcake and can't wait to go back for more. Not only does Sensitive Sweets bakery make great cookies and cupcakes, but they customize cakes to your liking and design. For more information about Sensitive Sweets bakery you can find them online.
Sensitive Sweets bakery is about 30 minutes from Los Angeles, California and is located in Orange County, California one to two hours north of San Diego County. Their hours of operation are Tues-Fri 10am-6pm and Saturdays 10am-5pm. They are closed on Sunday and Mondays.

OC Family - Sensitive Sweets serves up a variety of treats and fanciful birthday cakes free of wheat
22-Sep-2011Food allergies are no problem at O.C.’s gluten-free bakery. While most kids would squeal with excitement at the sight of cookies and cupcakes at a party, Alex and Gavin DeArmey, 5 and 2 years old, are not allowed to partake in the festive treats.
It’s not because their mother, Katrina, is opposed to all things sweet and delicious. Rather, the DeArmey boys are two of the more than 12 million Americans living with food allergies. According to the Center for Disease Control, food allergies result in more than 300,000 ambulatory-care (outpatient) visits a year among children alone.
“My boys had never been to a bakery for fear of cross contamination,” said Katrina; her sons have milk, egg and nut allergies. But when Katrina received a suggestion from her Parents of Kids with Food Allergies Support Group that the family visit Sensitive Sweets in Fountain Valley, Orange County's dedicated gluten-free and nut-free bakery, it was time to change all of that. “The look on their faces when I told the boys they could have anything in the case was priceless.”
It’s families like the DeArmeys that inspired Melanie Hohman to create Sensitive Sweets in Fountain Valley. In fact, Melanie’s youngest son Bradley has severe life-threatening food allergies, as well as eczema and respiratory issues. “It’s heart breaking to watch these kids feel left out while other kids are enjoying cupcakes, birthday cakes and cookies,” said Hohman. “Sensitive Sweets was created out of love and necessity because everyone deserves a treat.”
The bakery specializes in breads, cupcakes, muffins, cookies and birthday cakes that are made without wheat (gluten), milk or dairy (casein), eggs, soy or nuts.
“I don’t know of another bakery in all of Orange County that I would feel comfortable ordering from for my oldest son, who has such severe nut allergies that he cannot even have items baked in the same facility as other items containing nuts,” said Katrina. “It's so nice to order with confidence and know that there's NO chance of cross contamination at Sensitive Sweets.”
